Hopkinson Road DN375 GRP PM and PS1 & PS2 (South) Upgrade

Project overview

The suburb of Byford is rapidly expanding. The Water Corporation identified that the pressure being put on the current wastewater system would be unsustainable. An upgraded system needed to be designed to service the area for the foreseeable future.

The project involved the installation of 10,490m of DN375 GRP wastewater pressure main as well as the mechanical and electrical upgrade of two pump stations, PS1 and PS2 (south) on Hopkinson Road. The project was also split into two portions. By doing this we were able to provide immediate relief to the existing residents of Byford, while the second section would cater for expansion needs. By handing over SEP 1 on time the need for costly tankering in peak periods was eliminated. SEP 1 incorporated the pipework between Ch0 and Ch1500. SEP 2 incorporated the pipework between Ch1500 and Ch8480. The last 2,000m included a duplication main to cater for the future “F” Type 180 pump station on Forrest Road.

The project also involved 5 horizontal bores across existing roads, 265m of directional drilling to avoid the removal of protected trees, a section valve, a number of air and scour valves, connections into existing pipework at Ch0 and Ch1500 and a DN400 stainless steel pipework connection into the existing waterworks suction tank at Ch8480.

DM Civil’s extensive experience in pipelaying of both small and large pipe diameters, in particular GRP pipework and construction or upgrading of pump stations of various sizes, was an asset to this project. The client was assured that the works would be completed competently, on time and within budget.

Significant achievements and benefits

Utilising trenchless technology to install the pipework across Thomas Road meant our personnel could work in a safe environment away from the high daily traffic volume occupying the road. Moreover, safety to pedestrians, cyclists and all other vehicles using the road was improved by reducing traffic management requirements.

Buried existing services and overhead powerlines, stretching over 8.5km, were an issue.The project team spent a significant amount of time carefully locating, marking, pot holing and recording these services to guarantee there were no delays to the programme and to ensure everyone’s safety.

Project planning and supervision were key to ensuring the success of this project. Our project management team delivered a class result, made possible by a solid relationship between DM Civil and the client. We utilised a hands-on, collaborative and practical approach when challenging situations arose.

The project ran over 8 months and at its peak had 5 crews installing pipe, constructing concrete structures and installing underground bores. Over 35,000 man hours were worked without a single minor incident (MI), medical treatment injury (MTI) or lost time injury (LTI). This is testament to the supervision and management of the project and most importantly, demonstrates everyone’s attitude towards working safely.

The developing suburb of Byford and its immediate surrounding areas will benefit immensely from this upgrade to the wastewater system.
