The first task to be undertaken by the project management and engineering team was to meet with the local government authority (LGA) to discuss stakeholder management and traffic control. This was carried out during the tender phase to provide a basis for the bid submission.

The two key areas for successful delivery for the project were close liaison with and accommodation of LGA concerns and the same attention to the local Water Corporation operations unit. The LGA was approached at time of tender and the meeting allowed our team to identify areas of concern and to clarify some misconceptions of our requirements. Likewise, the local asset operators were consulted at time of tender. Having worked with some members of the team before, and with our understanding of wastewater networks, the commissioning issues were easily addressed.

Another aspect to the delivery of the project was the use of competent and reliable subcontractors. From previous works with Kier Contracting, we were confident of the HDD installation, which was a major aspect of the works. Latent ground conditions over part of the route were picked up by the drillers and these areas handled accordingly. Traffic management was also a key component of the works and our previous good experience with Denmark Traffic Management continued throughout.      

A crucial requirement to start was to secure a local laydown area sufficient for a reasonably large workforce, the full length of pipe, and a dewatering effluent treatment area, particularly for the open trenched gravity sewer along North Road. Fortunately, the project management team was able to negotiate the use of what was essentially a dog exercise park adjacent to the open cut sewer alignment on North Road and Lockyer Avenue, very close to a formal lake, for dewatering outfall.

Overall Benefit

DM Civil was able to complete an urgent project for the client ahead of time and under budget. The result of this achievement, apart from ensuring that our client guarantees the safety of the community and a key stakeholder, demonstrates that DM Civil can be relied upon to deliver critical assets on time.
