HP048 Gas Pipeline Protection

Gas pipeline integrity management is an important part of pipeline operations. The criticality of the pipeline, in the context of the larger civil project, prompted our client to engage DM Civil early for advice regarding pipeline protection systems and installation to ensure a high-quality outcome.

• DM Civil worked with the client at the tender stage to develop a suitable protection system for the pipeline. Our collaborative approach with the client resulted in a methodology that was both cost and time efficient, while still presenting a high quality solution.
• The protection system chosen for the pipeline involved 3 parts. Holiday detection and non-destructive testing was carried out on the pipeline to ensure that the existing coating was undamaged, and the steel pipe wall thickness was within operable limits. Second, Canusa Wrapidbond and Wrapidcoat were selected as an overwrap for the pipeline for additional corrosion and mechanical protection. Lastly, RC slabs were placed along the length of the pipeline to provide additional mechanical protection, as extensive civil works were to be carried out afterwards.
• Despite being located in a rural area, DM Civil was required to contend with the presence of multiple existing services. Careful digging to expose the gas pipeline for wrapping without damaging the existing coating, and without damaging nearby services, was required along the full length of the works. DM Civil did so without issue and holiday testing of the pipeline prior to wrapping confirmed no coating damage due to the excavation.
• Proximity to road traffic was a concern to the client during the tender period. No detours were available, and the pipeline was located close to the pavement edge. Pavement removal would be an issue as well, as reinstatement would be costly and time consuming, and the LGA was keen to see the traffic flow restored ASAP. DM Civil’s careful excavation techniques resulted in no adverse effect to the pavement, minimal traffic management, and a quick restoration to the operation of the road.

DM Civil successfully carried out the protection of the pipeline on time, enabling the larger highway construction project to advance unimpeded. Our client was very happy with the outcome, which has since led to DM Civil tendering pipeline protection works on a regular basis.
