Welshpool Station HP Gas Pipeline Relocation

Within minutes of commencing excavation, DM Civil unearthed a buried mass concrete block directly on the alignment. As the alignment could not be modified, DM Civil acted quickly to mobilise rock breaking equipment to deal with this latent condition.

After commencing the project, our client ATCO Gas, was faced with a problem: the proximity of the pipeline to the major infrastructure project about to take place. Concerned with the effect this would have on the pipeline’s integrity, ATCO Gas workshopped enhanced pipe protection measures with DM Civil that could be incorporated within the project’s short timeframe. The outcome was the use of STOPAQ protective overwrap applied to the pipeline, and a series of concrete slabs above the pipeline, to provide mechanical protection. DM Civil acted quickly to procure and install the additional protective measures, within the project timeframe.

The presence of multiple other contractors on the small site contributed to the difficulty of the project. Excavation and backfill was sequenced such that access could still be maintained for critical works around the site for other contractors. DM Civil worked with the client and other contractors to efficiently adjust works to suit, without the need for delays in schedule.

A number of unknown services and clashes with the overall station design were identified during the works, presenting some last-minute challenges. DM Civil worked with the client to modify the configuration of bends along the alignment to reduce depth of cover to avoid these, and utilized shoring to hold up the runny sands present on site. Quick actions from the team helped to mitigate schedule delays as a result.
