Lot 101 Sparks Road, Henderson

As part of their Liquefied Gas Project on Barrow Island, Chevron and its partners needed a large hardstand lay down area for materials and pre-assembled components that could be stored prior to shipment.

Project overview

They also needed a large training facility to allow for the approximately 4000 strong workforce that would mobilise to Barrow Island to complete the gas plant works. Lot 101 Sparks Road was an empty 70,000m2 parcel of land within the Australian Marine Complex that suited these needs perfectly.

CB&I and Kentz Joint Venture (CKJV) had mechanical and electrical contracts with Chevron. CKJV engaged DM Civil to complete the hardstand and services for the training facility. The project involved completing bulk earthworks across the entire site culminating in 18,000m3 of cut to fill, constructing a sealed pavement layer over 65,000m2 in area to be used as the storage hard stand, installation of services for the future training facility and construction of a 425 bay car park complete with electric security gates, line
marking and lighting.

With a tight construction program, we utilised GPS technology to improve efficiency and streamline earthworks and service installation. This reduced Surveyor involvement and resulted in meeting necessary deadlines.

Significant achievements and benefits

By using the right construction techniques and being flexible and well organised, DM Civil was able to meet the deadlines imposed by the client. Being a Chevron site, we also had to comply with rigorous safety and environmental guidelines throughout the project.

The construction program was extremely tight. Therefore, to manage the large site for earthworks and pavement layers, GPS control for both the Construction Manager and the grader was installed. This allowed the grader operator to complete bulk earthworks and trimming of the subgrade, while at the same time cutting the earthworks to within 20mm of the final design. Our Construction Manager used the GPS software to instruct excavator and loader operators to cut and fill bulk earthworks where the grader was not suitable.

The works were completed over the summer months and therefore dust management was crucial to the success of this project. The worksite was divided into lots to minimise the area exposed to wind. Once completed, road pavement was installed immediately or temporary stabilisation applied to reduce dust. This methodology satisfied both Chevron and the City of Cockburn.

The site, although in one of Perth’s south western suburbs, was constructed under strict Oil and Gas safety and environmental guidelines. DM Civil achieved successful completion of this project with no environmental incident or lost time injury.

This project provided CKJV the ability to safely store and control large pre-fabricated items for Chevron’s Barrow Island gas plant. By achieving completion of works within the tight program, CKJV were able to keep shipments on track. The new storage area provided additional flexibility for the client, giving them the ability to hold items that were not immediately required on site.
